Yes, it is!

You can use all the nice little tools Linux has on-board:
cpio, tar, dd, dump/restore, ... and save
/usr/sap, /sapmnt + {/oracle|/sapdb|/informix|/db2}. 

But you have to take care of the database. Especially if you want
to backup a database on-line it depends pretty much on the database
because then you have to use the appropriate tools.
If the database and R/3 are off-line it's only a backup of simple
files/partitions.

For some databases it's also possible to control backup/restore
out of SAP (CCMS, SAPDBA).
